Buy Your Supplies
- Boxes โ Plan on ~10 boxes per room. Medium boxes should be your most common size.
- Small boxes โ Use for heavy items โ books, canned goods, cleaning tubs, laundry supplies.
- Large garbage bags โ 40โ50 gallon Hefty bags with drawstrings. Perfect for soft items.
- Packing tape โ You'll use more than you think. Buy extra.
- Packing paper โ For wrapping fragile items โ plates, glasses, bowls.
- Markers โ Bold, dark markers for clear labeling.
- Zip ties โ Great for bundling hangers and keeping things together.
Make the Boxes
- Batch your box-making โ Don't make one box at a time. Build 5โ15 boxes for a room before you start filling.
- 3-strip tape rule โ Close all bottom flaps. Tape one strip down the center seam, then one strip on each side of it.
- Why 3 strips? โ This creates one wide reinforced band across the bottom โ boxes won't open under weight.
- Box size matters โ Heavy items (books, tools) โ small box. Light bulky items (pillows, lampshades) โ large box.
Fill Everything Up
Soft items โ Bags
- โ Use Hefty bags for pillows, blankets, comforters, towels, and clothes.
- โ Clothes on hangers: group 5โ15 hangers together, slide a Hefty bag up from the bottom, and poke the hooks through a small hole in the top. Tie the bottom closed.
- โ Dresser drawers: leave clothes inside โ they don't add meaningful weight. Remove jewelry, papers, or books.
Boxes โ the wedge technique
- โ Fill boxes as full as possible without overflowing โ full boxes are more rigid and stack better.
- โ Arrange items wedged snugly against each other and the box walls so nothing shifts during the drive.
- โ Odd-shaped items (brooms, guitar, lamp bases) do NOT need to go in boxes โ wrap them or leave them as-is.
- โ TVs: the safest place for a flat screen is inside a TV moving box. Worth buying.
Kitchen โ most fragile, handle with care
- โ Use small or medium boxes for kitchen items โ they get heavy fast.
- โ Wrap each plate, bowl, and glass individually with packing paper.
- โ Stack plates vertically like records โ they break less often this way.
- โ The extra paper bunched around each item acts as cushion.
- โ Liquids (cooking oils, cleaners, bathroom products): put them in a sealed Ziploc or grocery bag first to prevent spills.
Label Every Box
- Scratch out old labels โ If reusing boxes, cross out any previous labels so movers don't get confused.
- Write the room name โ "Kitchen," "Master Bedroom," "Living Room" โ on the TOP and at least one SIDE.
- Add a contents summary โ "Plates + pots" or "Winter clothes + shoes." Two or three words is enough.
- Use color coding โ Assign a color of tape or marker to each room โ makes it easy to sort quickly.
- Mark fragile boxes โ Write FRAGILE in big letters on all sides and the top.
Super Secret Pro Tip
Wardrobe boxes have their place โ especially for high-end garments. But let's be real: they're expensive, bulky, and eat up precious truck space. ๐ Here's the budget-friendly hack our pros swear by instead:
The Garment Bag Hack โ step by step:
- 1
Keep your clothes right on the hangers โ no folding, no wrinkles.
- 2
Group by category: shirts together, dresses together, jackets together.
- 3
Slide a large trash bag up from the bottom over each group.
- 4
Poke the hangers through a small hole in the top of the bag.
- 5
Tie the bottom of the bag closed to keep clothes clean and dust-free.
- 6
Use zip ties around the hooks to keep hangers from spreading apart.
Move smarter, not harder. ๐ก
Important Rules & Reminders
Disconnect propane tanks from gas grills before the move.
Empty charcoal grills of all ash.
Movers cannot transport flammable items โ no gas, fuel, or propane.
Take all valuables with you personally: jewelry, firearms, cash, irreplaceable items.
Empty drawers that are full of books or heavy papers โ these add too much weight.
